Monday's Minute Challenge 6/8
Hey everyone! Today I have another Monday's Minute Challenge for you! It's 299 words exactly, and I used the prompt submitted by Christine. I had to use, or base my story around, the phrase: "She was like a rose, deceptively beautiful, until someone got close enough to be pricked."
Tomorrow I'll have a cover reveal for you, and I'm thinking about starting a serial story on here. Weekly, or bi-weekly maybe? Anyway, enjoy this little scene between Tiffany and Mike (who may or may not be showing up here again... just saying :)
Mike stared at Tiffany’s back as they walked. If there was one thing he had learned about her during this whole escapade, it was this: She was like a rose, deceptively beautiful, until someone got close enough to be pricked. He was still smarting from the last verbal jab she had thrown his way.
And when she did shut her mouth (which wasn’t often) anyone brave (or stupid) enough to talk to her had better brace himself for a whole lot of thorns. Which is why Mike could hardly believe he was doing this. He stopped in the middle of the hallway and crossed his arms.
“Tiffany, stop.”
“I know what I’m doing.” She snapped.
She didn’t pause or even glance in his direction. Mike clenched his jaw, but didn’t move to follow her.
“You’re forgetting that I’m the one who’s been here before.” He continued, fighting the urge to grab her by the shoulders and shake her until she stopped being so stubborn.
Even without seeing her face, he could tell she was rolling her eyes. “So? I saw the map, how hard could it possibly be?”
“Saw” was Tiffany-ese for “hacked through several safeguards, decoded lines and lines of text, and then memorized classified files”.
“But,” Mike played his trump card, “They didn’t mark the booby traps on there.”
She actually paused and looked back at him. “What traps?”
He gave her an incredulous look. “You’re kidding, right? They don’t just leave the stuff you’re after lying around!”
Tiffany slowly walked back his way as a series of thumps came from around the corner. “This wouldn’t be the first one, would it?” she asked warily.
Something screeched, causing both of them to jump.
“Um...” Mike tore his eyes away from the large shadow preceding the creature. “Yup.”
