Excerpt for Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day! By special request, I'm sharing an excerpt from my current novel project, Villain . This is my mom's favorite scene that I've written so far, and she asked me to post it today. Additionally, it's an appropriate post for today, since it centers around my MC and her mother-figure. **Note: Ika's Aunt Meira is NOT based on my own mother, nor any other female relative, and is purely fictional** Enjoy! Something’s wrong. Something’s wrong. Something’s wrong. The words loop themselves around inside my skull, twisting and turning and snaking through every thought like a streamer, winding them all together into an incomprehensible knot of worry. Something. Is. Wrong. The fear drives my feet faster, and my earbuds blare a numbing beat in my ears. It’s so much easier like that today, easier not to think when I let every note of the songs feel for me. I knew something wasn’t right when 2:30 came and went, and Aunt Meira wasn’t at th...

Blurring the Lines: Poetry and Prose

Recently I've been writing poetry. A shock, I know. You never would have guessed, right? It's not like I've put up three poems since restarting this blog and declared my absolute and adoring love for National Poetry Month. Assuming I've been writing poetry would be preposterous. Mind readers, I salute you. In all honesty, I never used to write poetry. And if you do happen to stumble across a poem from my childhood, there is a 99.999% chance I will shriek and cry and maybe throw it into the nearest ocean because I hate it and just thinking about it makes me want to crawl under a table. I stand the other .0007% for nostalgia's sake and .0003% because I maybe possibly actually stumbled across something good (???) But the interesting thing I've noticed recently is that even when I was writing novels, I was never that far off from poetry before. Cue research because I'm a nerd. In professional terminology, my style of writing falls under the label o...

Dragon's Girl -- Flash Fiction

Hello! Today I have a flash fiction story for Rachelle O'Neil's Flash Fiction Challenge :D (Be sure to stop by and check out the other stories as well! I read some of them, and they're really good! :D) I was given the prompt "Most people would've screamed at the sight of it. She laughed." by Sarah , and I could use it in any form.  Dragon's Girl ended up at 630 words. Enjoy! Most people would have screamed. She laughed.  Laughed as the dragon streaked across the sky. Laughed as she was swept into her mother’s arms and carried at a panicked, jostling pace. Laughed as the dragon landed in front of them and drew in a smoky breath. The bright, carefree giggles of the infant bubbled out of her mouth and hung in the air. The dragon paused, staring at the child. It crept closer, moving lightly like a cat across the rubble, eyes alight with curiosity. The trembling mother backed away, but the dragon kept coming. The woman stepped backwards again ...

The Crossways Book Review!

Image
Hey All! So it's Tuesday, and today I'm participating in Morgan Elizabeth Huneke's blog tour for her new book, The Crossways . Today's my day to post my review of the book, and my younger brother Ezra is back to share his thoughts as well! :D Be sure to enter the giveaway (for a free copy of the book), and check out the other lovely blogs on the tour! Also check back here on Wednesday and Friday, as I'll have interviews with Morgan and her character Adriel! Now, before we get to the reviews, a little about the book and the author: About the Book “M’lady, it has been fairly well confirmed that the Redona was hidden away by the merfolk at the conclusion of the Great War instead of destroyed as was commanded. My brother has confirmed to me Joseph’s belief that it was concealed at the Crossways.” Toarna pressed her fingertips together in thought. “It must be recovered and destroyed as was at first intended.” Emily, Allan, Jill, and Joey have ...
